We’re an Edinburgh based tech company that’s looking for a PR & Comms Manager to help us grow our business and to tell the world how we’re protecting children from abuse and reducing the risk of terrorism. This is an exciting time to join our team in this brand-new role as we’re growing fast and are well on the way to making a global impact.
At Cyan we deliver new technology to help law enforcement, social media and cloud companies block and find harmful content from paedophiles and terrorists. Described by the UK Government as offering “game-changing” tech, 2021 is a big year for us and we’ll be focusing on launching new products, continuing to expand internationally, and raising our profile.
If you enjoy being part of a quick moving organisation and like to make a difference fast, this role might be for you. You’ll also need to have developed ambitious business to business comms strategies before, and ideally have worked in the tech sector, although this isn’t essential.
We might be the right fit for you, if you’ve placed many high value stand-alone pieces in key broadsheets and specialist publications in your time and write engaging copy to an extremely professional standard (this is something that’s particularly important to us).
If you’re proactive, can spot an opportunity and can move quickly to secure coverage, then we want to hear from you. You’ll also need to be able to delve into industry related issues and develop an in-depth understanding of them to create our annual calendar of PR and comms activity.
This role really is for a go-getter, a positive human who wants to make a difference, and who can drive the objectives of their role. Key audiences include law enforcement, government, investors, charities, and NGOs, so it’s desirable that you have targeted these before with your comms activity.
We’re also a business that is growing internationally, and fast, the ideal person is someone who has helped a business to develop its profile across the UK and internationally. As well as UK media, ideally, you’ve worked with international media before (particularly the DACH region, the USA, Canada and Australia) and are a dab hand at developing relationships with key journalists (hopefully you’ll already have a few to bring to the table). We’re also looking for someone who can demonstrate how they have hooked into related key calendar dates to profile the work we do.
Proactively approaching media to establish Cyan as the go to source for comment on related industry, society, and technical issues, developing storylines to pitch to relevant media and using news jacking techniques to generate publicity will be your bread and butter. You’ll also be relied upon to source and create a steady stream of opinion pieces from senior colleagues for placement within key publications around the world, and for use on Cyan’s own blog and social media. If you’ve also worked with multiple partners, we’d like to hear about it too – these are likely to include UK government, charities, and partner organisations.
Working alongside the marketing executive, we’d love you to get creative and develop a strong and steady stream of social media content that engages Cyan’s target audience – think graphics, talking heads and podcasts.
On the practical side, it would be useful if you can manage and develop image libraries, and PR tools like media monitoring and media lists.
This role has no direct reports, but reports into the Marketing Manager and works alongside the Marketing Executive. As we mentioned though, although there are no guarantees, there’ll be plenty of opportunity for the right person to grow alongside the company.
You must be able to communicate and process great people skills. We pride ourselves on having great working relationships between colleagues and on collaborative working. That said, self-starters need only apply, as this role is for someone who wants to make it their own and is able to generate proactive PR and comms. This is a positive working environment in a company that has a strong mission and company culture.
You must be a bit of problem solver, someone who can think laterally to find a solution, and strong organisational and time-management abilities are essential. Although we’re a small company, we’re on the fast track to expansion and growth, so you must be able to work well under pressure when required and have a strong sense of commercial awareness, and the ability to think big.
When it’s possible, you may be asked to travel occasionally with this role.
Job Progression Opportunities
We’re committed to the career and personal development of our employees and always look to employee people who have the interest, skills and potential to progress within our company. The salaries are competitive, and we offer a matched pension scheme up to 5% contributions and holidays are generous. Flexible working arrangements, training and development opportunities are also part of the package.
Applying for the Role
We’re a diverse team and encourage applications from people with varied experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds.
The application process will involve an initial video interview with our HR agency. And for those making it through to a second round, a practical exercise and then a video interview with the Marketing Manager and CEO.
